Desikachar. I've read and re-read a chapter on Pranayma and I am still trying to wrap my head around all that it entails. The passage I keep referring to says, "Prana can be described as something that flows continuously from somewhere inside us, filling us and keeping us alive: it is vitality". It's amazing to me that something that is always available to us can seem so unattainable at times. For me, I am most aware of pranayama in those last few moments of a great practice, when my body assimilates all that it has achieved and my mind is completely at rest. When I am totally present and can experience that moment of contentment I feel truly awake and alive. How can we carry that feeling off the mat? I'm no expert and I don't have a one-size-fits-all answer, but when I take a few moments to really experience something that makes me happy, whether it be the warm sun on my skin or a great song, I become aware of how perfect life is. In this sutra Patanjali wanted us to look at all of our attachments’ and determine if those attachments are the pattern of our emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual attachments. Pleasure always comes from holding on to things that you like, and pain is always followed by aversion of the things that you dislike. When a particular things or person gives us pleasure our energy travels along with the mind to that person or things as a result and we can get so attached to it. We can’t image our life to live without those things and this is what Raga (attachment) is. For example we always think that eating chocolate or having a new car will give us a new happiness in life. However we fail to realize that the chocolate or the new car has not given us any new happiness, but it just triggered the old happiness within us.
When we rely on something or someone for our happiness the balance of energy and mind is tipped outside. As an outcome of this we are unable to find the centered state of being with us. Finally one should not get oneself confused that excessive attachments are based on assumption that it will contribute an everlasting happiness. Eventually all attachment will need to be released to find peaceful contentment and liberation from this wheel of Karma.
Arpita

Jana's Playlist

Hi Everyone,

Sometimes students ask me for my playlist, so this is one of the more recent.
